SYZ Bank Zurich

A New Spatial Identity for Contemporary Private Banking
How can a bank’s values be made visible through space?
Today, contemporary private banking is defined not only by the quality of its advice, but also by the quality of the environment in which that advice is delivered. In a sector where trust, discretion and personal relationships are central, the office takes on a new role: as a place of professional excellence, an expression of the bank’s identity and an integral part of the client experience. The redesign of Bank SYZ’s Zurich headquarters responds precisely to this ambition. It translates the values of private banking into an interior that not only supports discretion, trust and professionalism, but actively conveys them. The workplace becomes a spatial calling card for the bank: carefully composed, atmospherically nuanced and clearly attuned to the expectations of a sophisticated banking environment.

The project derives its distinctive character from the interplay of precision, restraint and a clear spatial attitude. At the same time, the concept introduces a vivid and confident design energy that gives the workplace presence and identity. Colour and material are not treated as decorative devices, but as deliberate tools used to create orientation, distinguish different areas and actively shape the atmosphere of the space. The result is an interior with a strong sense of presence and a material language that communicates permanence, professionalism and trust, qualities that are essential in private banking.
The design concept combines architectural clarity with a carefully curated selection of modern, functional furniture that brings together style and practicality with ease. Elegant desks, ergonomic task chairs and integrated storage solutions contribute to an efficient and well-structured working environment, while distinctive statement pieces lend the interior personality and character. It is precisely this balance between functionality and design expression that defines an office that not only performs well, but also leaves a lasting impression.

The layout brings together open workspaces, enclosed meeting rooms, lounge-like areas and collaborative zones, allowing the office to support different modes of concentration, privacy and exchange throughout the day. Each zone has its own identity, while still contributing to a coherent overall composition. The strategic use of stronger colour accents adds dynamism to the floor plan and supports a working atmosphere that feels focused, yet open, contemporary and forward-looking.

The meeting rooms express the design concept with particular clarity. Green-framed walls, generous curtains and large windows define the setting for conversation, while circular light fixtures introduce a strong geometric order to the space. Generously proportioned tables are paired with upholstered chairs in warm, neutral tones, creating an atmosphere that balances comfort, presence and concentration. These are spaces composed for professional exchange: materially restrained, precisely considered and oriented towards both discretion and trust.

Elsewhere, the project introduces a more domestic register into the banking workplace, particularly in the lounge and reception areas. These spaces are important because they shift the office away from a purely transactional reading and towards something more personal, a place where clients can feel received, not simply processed. Materially, the project is rich in texture. Herringbone timber flooring establishes a refined architectural base and gives the circulation areas a sense of continuity and craft. Carpeted zones in warm yellow define meeting and seating areas with a softer underfoot quality, subtly distinguishing places of pause and exchange from the harder-working transitional spaces.

The boardroom is especially effective in the way it balances gravity with lightness. A large table with a sculptural dark base anchors the room, while slim-framed green chairs keep the overall composition visually light. The continuous ring light overhead gives the space definition without heaviness. The muted green wall and vertically detailed joinery bring calm and order, allowing technology to sit within a more composed architectural setting. It is a room designed to hold attention, but never to distract from the conversation itself.

What the SYZ project shows particularly well is our experience in shaping office environments around both the operational needs of the business and the more intangible qualities that define how a company wants to be experienced. In a banking setting, that means creating interiors that support confidentiality, concentration and professionalism, while also offering clients an atmosphere of comfort, attentiveness and quiet distinction. It also means creating a workplace people want to return to - an environment that reinforces presence, reflects the company’s standards and makes the office feel like an asset rather than an obligation. In private banking especially, where trust is built through personal exchange, the physical workplace remains an essential part of the culture.

The strength of the design lies in how seamlessly these dimensions come together. The office works hard, but it never feels hard-edged. The result is a workplace with a clear point of view: contemporary, elegant and spatially assured. Through colour, material and planning, the redesign gives SYZ an interior that feels aligned, memorable and carefully composed a banking environment that understands the value of atmosphere as much as function.
